If you are planning a classic Land Rover Defender build, one of the first decisions you will face is this: a faithful restoration, or a restomod?
Both start with the same vehicle, and both involve stripping it down and rebuilding it from the ground up. But the end result is very different, and understanding the distinction will help you decide which one suits how you plan to use the car. At Shoreline we build both. Here is what each one involves.
The short answer
A Defender restoration keeps the original engine type, manual gearbox and period look, rebuilt to a higher standard than the factory. A Defender restomod keeps the classic shape but upgrades the engine, transmission, brakes, suspension and interior for modern roads. Choose a restoration for original character, and a restomod if you want to drive it every day.
Classic restoration: keeping the original character
A classic Defender restoration is about preserving what made the original vehicle special while making it reliable enough to actually drive. The goal is authenticity: the original engine platform, the original transmission type, the original proportions and look, with every system rebuilt properly so the vehicle works the way it should, not the way a 30-year-old truck usually does.
What a Shoreline restoration includes
A rebuilt original-type diesel. For most restorations that means a 300TDi or TD5, depending on the year and model. Both are proven engines with real character. See our 300TDi vs TD5 comparison for how they differ.
A refurbished manual gearbox. The R380 5-speed keeps the mechanical connection to the vehicle that most purists want.
A period-correct look. Heritage colors such as Arles Blue, Keswick Green or Bahama Gold, classic steel wheels, and an interior that reflects the original design without the original wear. No touchscreens and no digital dash. Just the truck, the road and the experience of driving a classic Defender the way it was designed.
Who a restoration is for
The collector, the weekend driver, and anyone who loves the original character of a Defender 90 or 110 and does not want it changed. If you want to experience a vintage Land Rover Defender as it was built in the 1990s, without the reliability problems that came with it, the classic restoration is the right build. Our Heritage edition is built this way.
Defender restomod: classic shape, modern performance
A Defender restomod takes the opposite approach. The exterior keeps the classic silhouette, but underneath the vehicle is engineered for modern roads. "Restomod" is short for restoration plus modification: you keep what works, the look, the presence and the feel of a Defender, and you fix the things that let the original down. The lack of power. The cabin noise. The ride. The brakes. The dated interior.
What a Shoreline restomod includes
A modern engine. Depending on the build, an LS3 V8 producing 430 horsepower, a high-performance diesel, or a rebuilt and uprated original engine. The LS3 is the most popular choice for clients who want a Defender that keeps up with modern traffic. Read the full Defender V8 LS3 swap guide.
An upgraded transmission. A smooth 6-speed or 8-speed automatic makes highway driving and city traffic effortless. A manual is still available if you prefer one.
An interior built from scratch. Hand-stitched leather, heated seats, full soundproofing, a custom center console, modern gauges, climate control that works properly, and premium audio with Apple CarPlay.
Modern brakes and suspension. Upgraded disc brakes and performance suspension so the vehicle handles modern speeds safely. This is not optional: if you put a V8 in a classic Defender, the braking and suspension have to match.
Who a restomod is for
The daily driver. The person who wants a Defender for the school run, road trips, weekends away and everything in between. If you want a classic Land Rover Defender that drives like a modern vehicle but keeps the look and presence of the original, the restomod is the right build. Our Modern and Villain editions are built this way.
What stays the same in both builds
Whichever you choose, every Shoreline Defender is built from the ground up, and the standard does not change between the two.
The chassis is galvanized. Every build starts by stripping the vehicle to the bare chassis and either strengthening or replacing the frame with a galvanized unit. This prevents the corrosion that shortened the life of most original Defenders.
The body is finished to Range Rover standards. Panels are stripped, repaired where needed and painted using the same processes and tolerances as a modern Range Rover, with soundproofing throughout and panel gaps checked to millimeter precision.
Every system is rebuilt or replaced. Wiring, brakes, axles, differentials, cooling and the fuel system. Nothing is patched, and every build is backed by our 12-month warranty.
Full documentation. Weekly build photos and stage-by-stage updates through our online tracking portal, plus a 24-hour systems inspection and a 500-mile road test before the vehicle leaves the workshop.
Choosing the platform
Once you have decided between a restoration and a restomod, the next question is which Defender to build on: the compact Defender 90, the more versatile Defender 110 (as a Station Wagon, soft top or Double Cab), or the extended Defender 130. Our Defender 90 vs 110 guide covers the differences in detail.
Frequently asked questions
A restomod is a classic Land Rover Defender rebuilt from the ground up with modern upgrades: typically a more powerful engine, an automatic gearbox, better brakes and suspension, and a new luxury interior, while keeping the original shape.
A restoration rebuilds the Defender to its original specification and look, with an original-type diesel and manual gearbox. A restomod keeps the look but modernizes the engine, transmission, brakes, suspension and interior.
The LS3 V8 is the most popular choice, producing 430 horsepower. High-performance diesel packages and uprated original engines are also available.
A properly rebuilt Defender is far more reliable than an original one, because every system is rebuilt or replaced. For daily use in modern traffic, most clients choose a restomod for the extra power, automatic gearbox and comfort.
Yes. Every Shoreline restoration and restomod is built to the same standard and backed by a 12-month warranty.
